Ryan "IDA needs to respond to job losses at Merck in Swords"
28 November 2013
Brendan Ryan, Labour Party TD for Dublin Fingal, has described as a “massive blow” the decision by multinational company Merck to close its plant in Swords. MSD today informed employees at its Swords facility in Co. Dublin of its proposed plan to cease operations at the site by the end of 2017.
This proposed action would directly affect 570 people working for MSD at Swords as the plant will shut down on a phased basis between now and 2017 however no employees will leave before mid – 2014 at the earliest. In the second half of 2014 it is anticipated that approximately 130 people would leave the organisation and the remaining positions would be phased out over the following three years.
Ryan “This is shocking news for the workers at Merck and a blow to the community in Swords. Merck has been a strong employer in Swords since 1990 with excellent performance and highly skilled workers. This announcement also highlights that we are not out of the woods yet despite the recent improvement in national employment figures. I will be pursuing the IDA on their commitment to aggressively pursue a buyer for the plant in Swords to hopefully mitigate against these potential job losses. I have been pressuring the IDA to focus more attention on Fingal since I came into public office and it is high time they started delivering.”
