Ryan calls on Aer Lingus to drop their legal action against SIPTU

20 March 2014

Brendan Ryan, Labour Party TD for Dublin Fingal, has today called on Aer Lingus to drop their legal action against the Trade Union SIPTU. Aer Lingus are suing SIPTU due to threatened Industrial Action planned for last Friday 14 March but which was subsequently called off due to a high court injunction. Aer Lingus claim that the planned action had caused them financial loss. However the decision to sue SIPTU over this is a worrying move in the context of industrial relations in this country and Brendan Ryan is calling on Aer Lingus to drop this action.

Ryan “The root of this issue is a dispute over the pension scheme at Aer Lingus and the DAA. There is a high level expert panel recently appointed to try and resolve this complex dispute. The legal action taken by Aer Lingus against SIPTU is very unhelpful and has the potential to fatally damaging the on-going pension process. I am calling on Aer Lingus to drop their legal action against SIPTU and to demonstrate earnest engagement with the expert panel.”

Ryan has raised the pension dispute in the Dáil calling on all stakeholders to work towards a resolution and to engage with deferred pensioners who have not had a voice at the negotiations thus far. Deferred members are those who have left Aer Lingus/DAA but have not yet reached retirement age.
