Electrification of DART line to Balbriggan a welcome move
22 September 2015
Brendan Ryan, Labour Party TD for Fingal, has today welcomed the announcement from the Minister for Transport of the planned electrification of the train line north of Malahide as far as Drogheda.
Ryan “This is welcome news and will ensure that by 2022, the train line serving North County Dublin will be capable of providing a DART service to commuters. This is something I have been pressing for many years and it is much overdue, though very welcome.”
Ryan “The announcement comes as the Railway Order for the DART Underground proposal for Dublin City Centre has lapsed. This is a key piece of transport infrastructure and it is unfortunate that project in its current form has been shelved. The Government has committed to exploring other design options for the DART underground project.”
Ryan “The main capital announcements will be made next week and I look forward to news on a rail line to the Airport and on to Swords. The traffic chaos caused on Friday 18 September when a fire in the Port Tunnel closed down that route, highlights just how fragile the transport network on the M1 corridor is. We need a high speed, connected and reliable service for this corridor and I am pressing the Minister for a rail link as the long term solution. I look forward to the announcement next week”
