Priorities

Housing

I am Chair of the Labour Party internal committee on Housing. I set up this committee in 2013 to make recommendations to the Housing Minister on measures to tackle the complex housing crisis. Recent recommendations such as providing funding to turnaround vacant local authority housing units and for re-allocating some discretion regarding the provision of rent supplement have been delivered by the Minister.

Pyrite

Upon entering the Dáil in February 2011, I called for a task force to be set up to tackle the Housing crisis. This evolved into the eventual setting up of the Pyrite Resolution Board. Whilst the road is long and there are still obstacles to overcome, the PRB is beginning its work in remediating homes afflicted by Pyrite. I will continue to advocate on behalf of anyone who is suffering with this legacy of FF developer led economic practice.

Unemployment

North County Dublin has been drastically affected by the economic collapse of 2008 with unemployment rates soaring. The existing infrastructure was inadequate to cope with the amount of unemployed people seeking assistance. I lobbied hard for the opening of full Social Protection INTREO offices in both Balbriggan and Swords in order to provide a full “one stop shop” service for people seeking to return to the workforce. Both INTREO offices are due to open in Balbriggan (Gallens Mill) and Swords (Mainscourt/Fingal County Council offices) before the end of the year.

Education

Fingal is the fastest growing region in Ireland and it is vital we have enough schools to meet the need of an increasing population. Despite the economic conditions, Labour in Government has taken on the scourge of prefab accommodation head on with many schools in North County Dublin availing of central funding to provide permanent buildings. We have also seen new schools open in Swords, Donabate, Lusk and Balbriggan in the lifetime of this Government.

Helping the vulnerable and disadvantaged

I work hard to protect and assist any individual who has fallen between the cracks of our State’s organisations. If you have any difficulty on any issue then please do not hesitate to contact me and I will assist you in any way I can.
